Prison medication management

Prisoners at HMP Stoke Heath raised concerns about pain medication. They told us that people had their medication stopped and that there was no support for coming off these medications, even when people may have been on them for many years.

They also told us that they did not have a full explanation about why this was happening, the medication was just stopped.

We shared our findings with NHS England Health and Justice, who commission the service. We then met with the team to discuss our concerns.

Outcome

NHS England have since met with the provider to look at ways to make this easier for the patients.

  • There will now be improved communications with patients about the medication they are on and any changes to this, including explaining the need to stop certain pain medications.
  • Every person who needs their medication changed will be offered full support including access to mental health support during this time.
